CBAM for buyers

Learn how to use the Tacto CBAM cost calculator to calculate the expected CBAM costs of your imports.

💡 CBAM cost calculator: cbam-cost-calculator.tacto.ai

With the Tacto CBAM cost calculator, you can calculate the expected costs that the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) will add to your imports. The calculator is available at cbam-cost-calculator.tacto.ai — regardless of whether you already use Tacto.

What can the CBAM cost calculator do?

The calculator offers two calculation modes:

  • Single calculation: Enter the data for a single product or a single import and receive a cost estimate immediately.

  • Bulk calculation via Excel upload: Upload an Excel file with multiple products or imports and calculate the CBAM costs for all items at once.

This allows you, among other things, to:

  • Estimate the CBAM costs incurred on your imports.

  • Compare Suppliers from different countries and determine which Supplier would be cheaper once CBAM costs are taken into account.

How are the CBAM costs calculated?

The net CBAM costs are calculated in three steps:

  1. Calculate embedded emissions: The emission factor (tCO₂e/t) is multiplied by the imported quantity (t).

  2. Determine free allocation: The total benchmark (benchmark of the end product + sum of the benchmarks of the precursors) is multiplied by the quantity, the phase-out factor and the Cross-Sectoral Correction Factor (CSCF).

  3. Calculate net CBAM costs: The net emissions (embedded emissions minus free allocation) are multiplied by the effective CO₂ price (CBAM price minus the CO₂ price in the country of origin).

💡 The phase-out factors for free allocation decrease gradually: 2026 = 0.975 · 2027 = 0.950 · 2028 = 0.900 · 2029 = 0.775 · 2030 = 0.515 · 2031 = 0.390 · 2032 = 0.265 · 2033 = 0.140 · from 2034 = 0. The CSCF is currently assumed to be 1.0.

Where can I find more information about the CBAM calculator?

On the CBAM cost calculator page at cbam-cost-calculator.tacto.ai, you will find:

  • Explainer videos that guide you step by step through using the calculator.

  • An overview of the calculation logic that transparently shows how the costs are determined.

Is the calculator updated when the CBAM regulation changes?

The CBAM regulation is in its implementation phase and may change based on new publications by the EU. Tacto continuously monitors regulatory developments. As soon as relevant changes or clarifications are available, the calculator will be updated accordingly.
